STL Approves: The most consequential thing on the ballot in St. Louis City in 2020 that you haven’t heard of yet.
In our third FOCUS on Policy session, we’ll look at STL Approves, otherwise known as “Proposition D for Democracy,” which is an effort to change how people are elected to office in the City of St. Louis.
The current method for elections in the city is a standard model of a partisan primary followed by a general election. Because St. Louis is so heavily Democratic this makes the primary election the consequential one, creating some awkward results, including leaders elected with a plurality of less than one third of the voters. STL Approves is an effort to address these concerns via a different voting system, one that involves a general (nonpartisan) primary followed by a run-off election between the top two vote-getters in the primary. This is an as-of-yet little known issue campaign that has the potential of creating very consequential changes in how we elect leaders in the City of St. Louis. Please join us to learn more. We will have a representative from the Proposition D campaign, an expert in election methodologies, and more, to dissect what this could mean for St. Louis.
Panelists will include:
- Dr. David Kimball, Professor of Political Science, University of Missouri-St. Louis, and expert on voting methodologies
- Jo Mannies, retired St. Louis Public Radio reporter, with four decades of political reporting experience
- Benjamin Singer, representative of the Prop D campaign
Launched at the beginning of 2020, our FOCUS on Policy series is designed to provide you with a comprehensive overview of key issues taking place in our region. Held monthly, each morning session will include time for networking, briefing from community leaders and Q&A.
